Haitian Quake Relief

Haitian Quake Relief

Working with our Somebody Cares Caribbean chapter and it's network of churches, we are getting firsthand accounts of the situation and needs. The infra-structure in the Haitian capital is overwhelmed by the destruction. The scope of human suffering is unfathomable. But the Church is a beacon of hope and integrity in the midst of the chaos and pain.

For those wishing to donate goods for Haitian Relief and Recovery through Somebody Cares we want to say thank you and would like to ask for your cooperation as we gather and ship resources to the hardest hit areas of Haiti.
The following items have been requested for shipment to Haiti.  It would be best if each church adopt ONE type of item and send us uniform pallets rather than mixed loads.
  • Baby formula (dry/powder)
  • Baby wipes
  • Baby bottles
  • Diapers
  • Baby clothes
  • Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush)
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Vitamins
  • First Aid kits
  • Socks
  • Blankets
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Flashlights
  • Batteries
  • Candles
  • Flip-flops (new)
  • T-shirts (new)
  • Pants (new)
  • Lightweight jackets (new)
  • Non-perishable food items NOT in cans (or cans with pull tops)
  • Generators of all sizes- gas or diesel
  • Dust masks
  • Working with SC Caribbean to determine the best response strategy; FUNDING IS URGENTLY NEEDED for shipping and initial response efforts. Additional resource and team needs will be posted in as soon as we have details.

  • Mobilizing people to pray for the quake survivors and relief workers.

To best facilitate the receipt and shipping of those goods to Haiti, we ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

All goods need to be on standard 42” PALLETS and SHRINK WRAPPED if possible

This most recent trip to Haiti was both heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time. Heartbreaking because 1.2 million people still live in tent cities; many others live in tents on their own property. Heart-warming because of the resilience of the human spirit evident in the Haitian people.
Caring is contagious. It's much like the principle of reaping and sowing: sowing kindness reaps more kindness. John Clifton from Somebody Cares St. Augustine recently shared an example. "Late in 2007, we were made aware of a need: a 68-year-old polio victim and now a cancer patient had to shower outside using the garden hose because he could no longer get into the tubs in his mobile home. When we met with Mr. Lewis we knew that we had to help, what we didn't know was how. "
Since October 2008, Times Square Church in New York City has been sending teams to the Galveston area for Hurricane Ike relief and rebuilding. The most recent Texas team, however, had the opportunity to help with Haiti relief as they partnered with Somebody Cares for the construction of our first Homes of Hope.
