This most recent trip to Haiti was both heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time. Heartbreaking because 1.2 million people still live in tent cities; many others live in tents on their own property. Heart-warming because of the resilience of the human spirit evident in the Haitian people.

Caring is contagious. It's much like the principle of reaping and sowing: sowing kindness reaps more kindness. John Clifton from Somebody Cares St. Augustine recently shared an example. "Late in 2007, we were made aware of a need: a 68-year-old polio victim and now a cancer patient had to shower outside using the garden hose because he could no longer get into the tubs in his mobile home. When we met with Mr. Lewis we knew that we had to help, what we didn't know was how. "

Since October 2008, Times Square Church in New York City has been sending teams to the Galveston area for Hurricane Ike relief and rebuilding. The most recent Texas team, however, had the opportunity to help with Haiti relief as they partnered with Somebody Cares for the construction of our first Homes of Hope.

There are hundreds of thousands of orphans in Haiti. Their stories are heart wrenching. But in the midst of suffering, even they are beginning to find hope. Somebody Cares is caring for the fatherless in Haiti. We have been providing baby formula, food, water, protein powder, vitamins, tarps and toys to children's homes; more is on the way.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked the country of Haiti in January left hundreds of thousands of Haitians homeless. People are still living in tents and make-shift shelters on the streets, parks and amongst the rubble of what was once their home.
